Hume over the moon after winning first Hero ISL trophy

Iain Hume missed his penalty but saw Atlético de Kolkata come from behind to beat Kerala Blasters FC 4-3 on penalties and win the 2016 Hero Indian Super League, their second in three years. At the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Sunday evening, the match ended 1-1 in full-time and when extra time too failed to decide the winner, it all came down to penalty shootout where the Kolkata team and their goalkeeper Debjit Majumder performed admirably. Hume, who was on the losing side for Kerala in the final of Hero ISL 2014, spoke to indiansuperleague.com after the match and shared his thoughts on winning what was his first Hero ISL trophy. Here are the excerpts from the interview.

Not the best way to end a final but you must be thrilled with the win…

Obviously, that is what we fought for throughout two and a half months. For Kerala it was a horrible way to lose a game. They’ve had both sides of the spectrum in the last four days, so they know how we feel. The way they feel right now I can’t imagine. One of my best mates missed a penalty, but we are in it to win it. I had the heartache two years ago when I was on the other side and I feel sorry for them but on my side I’m absolutely chuffed. This is why we play. The atmosphere was fantastic and the fans will be back next year to support their team and the team will be back for the fans, so they must look to stick together. I’m just over the moon to come away with the win today, I couldn’t go through the heartache again.

What were your feelings when you missed the penalty?

It was a terrible penalty. We have worked for this for the last four months, every day of pre-season till today has been a grind, and it’s been hard but we have played for each other like in the semi-finals where we made nine changes for the second leg. I’m not sure but I think every player with the exception of one has played this season. Which shows how much work we have put in during the season to get to where we are now. It is a testament to everybody involved and we are just buzzing. I may not look like it but I am over the moon right now.

You spoke about Kerala Blasters before the final and they put in a lot of heart and soul today and you have played with many of their players before. What are your thoughts on that?

Two teams who deserve to be here today and it is two teams who wear their heart on their sleeves and we fight for every blade of grass and you’ve seen that in the last 16 games and you have seen it again tonight. We have put our blood, sweat and tears for the cause and a testament to the league and somebody had to lose unfortunately. I do feel bad for the boys who I have played with but again I have to be selfish and enjoy today.
